Sansui Electric Co., Ltd. was established in 1947 as a transformer manufacturer, but in the 1960s it gained a reputation as a major producer of audio components. Despite its huge popularity (especially in the United States) in the 60s and 70s, after 1985 the company started to bring much lower profits than its rivals (Sony, Pioneer or Technics). It was the end of the era of hi-end equipment development, which was associated with the increase in sales of personal computers. The company Sansui Electric Co., Ltd. then focused on the production of high-end components in Japan, and also began to produce high-end TV sets and other video equipment while stopping exports. At the end of the 1990s, the brand name was used on video devices manufactured by other companies. Finally, Sansui Electric Co., Ltd. as a part of Grande Holdings went bankrupt in 2014. It is worth noting that Sansui was the first company that used transformers in audio equipment, and introduced a high-voltage tube-transistor (hybrid) and QS / RM (Quadrasonic System / Regular Matrix) to the market, which allowed to get the four-channel sound from the two-channel sound.
Sansui promoted the SS60 as headphones which can “help you avoid bad room acoustics, noisy neighbours, city bustle and countryside noise”. This model is characterized by an extremely light and unique Privacy-Balance design, which effectively eliminates noise but lets some external sounds in to disable a claustrophobic effect. The SS60 are equipped with volume potentiometers – for each channel separately. Thanks to lightweight membranes made from polyester foil the provided sound has low level of distortion ranging from the deepest tones to ultrasound. High power and high sensitivity enable greater versatility, and the ear-friendly design ensures long hours of nonstop pleasure without fatigue.
Old pads have been replaced with properly selected substitutes made of eco leather, which were moisturized and protected with a balm based on lanolin, aloe, beeswax and Carnauba wax.
Included in the set are specially designed and hand-made solid headphone stands. The material is high quality beech wood covered with Chinese oil produced from natural oils, which gives the stands a beautiful look and makes them very pleasant to the touch. At the top of the stand, the headband rests on a lining made of natural leather, felt pads have been affixed to the base to prevent furniture scratches. Potentiometers are in perfect condition.
